A total of 11 new case studies have been added to the award-winning eFM programme.

eFM, which is suitable for both midwives and obstetricians, covers all aspects of intrapartum electronic fetal monitoring. It is used for both training and continuing professional development.

The updated elements include two new ‘test’ case studies, which give learners the chance to test their CTG interpretation skills using clinical information and heart rate traces from real labours. These sessions are marked and carry CPD points. Meanwhile, there are nine new learning case studies, which are designed for more reflective thinking. These are ideally suited to group training as learners can pause the traces and discuss the findings.

Anita Hedditch, Clinical Lead for eFM, said: “These case studies provide an excellent way for learners to build their CTG interpretation skills in the safety of a virtual ward. It’s the closest you can get to real, live experience.”

She added: “We keep eFM under constant review and additional case studies are being added on a regular basis to ensure that the programme reflects the last clinical practice. All eFM sessions have recently been reviewed and updated in line with the 2017 guidance from the UK’s National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE).”

Following these updates, the 2011 and 2013 case studies will be removed on 24 November. Further case studies will be added in 2018. Keep an eye on the eIntegrity website for details of the next updates.

Alongside the case studies, eFM also includes knowledge sessions, self-assessment questions and a comprehensive e-library. It has been developed in the UK by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, the Royal College of Midwives and NHS England e-Learning for Healthcare.
