Essential FGM e-learning for health professionals

Be prepared for some devastating and tragic figures:

1.     There are an estimated 130 million women and girls living with female genital mutilation (FGM) worldwide – mostly in African countries

2.     In the UK, FGM is estimated to affect some 137,000 women

All health professionals – including school nurses, practice nurses, health visitors and GPs – should be aware of FGM and its health implications, and have a key role in providing support for survivors of FGM and in the prevention of FGM in girls and women at risk.

Developed in partnership with the Department of Health’s FGM Prevention Team and supported by organisations including RCPCH, RCOG, RCGP, RCM, SAPHNA, CPHVA and FORWARD, our new FGM programme is an essential, high-quality e-learning resource designed to improve the knowledge and awareness among health and social care professionals of some of the issues which FGM causes for women and children.

Flexible online access

The FGM programmeis available 24/7 via the internet – including on tablets and smartphones – so learners can access content in the workplace, at home or on the move.

Sessions are knowledge-based and include case studies and input from service users and carers, with content updated regularly to reflect evolving practice and legislation so it meets the highest professional standards. Self-assessment exercises enable users to check their understanding on key topics and subscribers can record their progress online and print certificates of completion as evidence of CPD.

The FGM programme can be used for self-directed training – either as a refresher on key topics or before a consultation – and is also invaluable as a teaching aid for group training sessions. Users can select modules that are relevant to their areas of interest or concern and revisit the content as many times as needed.
