Introduction to ESCAPE-pain elearning
ESCAPE-pain is a group rehabilitation programme for people with chronic joint pain, combining education, self-management and coping strategies with an exercise plan tailored to each participant.
This elearning provides two short sessions: one to help you decide how ESCAPE-pain could work in your organisation and what implementation involves, and another to help prospective facilitators prepare for the required facilitator training.
After completing this course, you should be able to:
- Describe the core components of the ESCAPE-pain approach.
- Explain the evidence and value case (including cost-effectiveness) at a high level.
- Identify what’s involved in resourcing and implementing the programme in a local setting.
- Outline participant eligibility considerations, including basic data collection needs.
- Recognise practical steps to support recruitment and retention.
You can also:
- Use/signpost relevant tools and resources to support delivery and implementation.
- Summarise key MSK context relevant to chronic knee/hip pain and back pain, including NICE-aligned concepts.
- Recognise contraindications and red flags that matter when planning exercise delivery.

The ESCAPE‑pain course was developed through a collaboration between Arthritis Research UK, the Health Innovation Network (formerly the AHSN for South London), and NHS England. With the ESCAPE‑pain programme, you gain online access to two focused, practical learning sessions for one clear subscription fee. This makes developing your understanding of the programme’s principles, evidence base and implementation requirements far more predictable and cost‑effective than organising multiple standalone training events or external workshops.
